Time flies away so fast, after 26 years they left Sierra Leone, Madam. Jaa-Hee Kim UNICEF’s first Country Representative to Sierra Leone and Bruce Kennedy UNICEF Programme Coordinator from 1984-1990 made another trip to Sierra Leone. Their trip this time was not as UNICEF staff, but on invitation courtesy of the Chief Executive Officer of FOCUS 1000 Mohammad Bialor Jalloh. They left Freetown last week Thursday, after they spent 2 weeks vacation in the country. Their two weeks trip was filled with deep sense of memories and surprises.

Over one million children to be vaccinated against polio since the Ebola outbreak

At a press press conference held at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation on Tuesday 23rd February, the Deputy Programme Manager Child Health Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) Dr. Mariama Murray has told journalists that this year’s campaign would target 1.5 million children between 0-59 months. “At least 95% of 0-59 month old will receive polio vaccines for free from the 26th-29th February, 2016” Dr. Murray said. This round of Polio marklete will be the first since the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone.

Religious and traditional healers’ intervention saves DIFID millions of pounds during the Ebola outbreak

The Social Development Adviser for DFID Richard Carter has disclosed to religious and traditional healers in Kambia district that their timely intervention during the difficult times of the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone saved DFID millions of pounds; which could have been used to provide treatment for thousands of Sierra Leoneans who would have been infected by the Ebola virus. He revealed that DFID had spent half a billion pounds to help contain the virus in Sierra Leone, and that 20 million pounds from that amount was spent on social mobilization. He made these remarks during his Social Mobilisation & Urgent Needs visit to Traditional and Religious leaders at the Kambia district DHMT conference hall on Monday 8th February, 2016.

FOCUS 1000 has been facilitating community engagements with Traditional Healers and Religious leaders in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Saniation in the Northern district of (Tonkolili, Port Loko, Kambia and Bombali districts) through the Social Mobilization Action Consortium (SMAC) with funding from DFID to reduce the further spread of the new Ebola cases reported early last month in the north.
